Manifest Destiny is part of Decolonize Dallas, a public art initiative mobilizing artists born into the communities in the crosshairs of gentrification. This piece criticizes DART, a transit system that masquerades as a public service while catering to suburban white comfort. It’s a system that invites wealth inward and forces Black families and working class immigrants out. In form and function, DART trains specifically are no different than the railroads integral to western expansion in 19th century United States. It is conquest disguised as accessibility. Hence the title, Manifest Destiny.
