Lovely, Dark, and Deep
Lovely, Dark, and Deep was first commissioned for the exhibition Re/Devaluing Colorism at the University of Texas San Antonio. Currently it is on display at the Hartsfield-Jackson Airport in Atlanta, Georgia. The title nods at the controversial legacy of the relaxer haircare brand Dark and Lovely inviting contemplation about black beauty standards, identity and if certain parts of our own culture truly serve us. The piece is also a direct line from a Robert Frost poem where darkness is seen as inviting, exciting, and a fertile soil essential for abundance. It is a quiet reversal of the dominant narratives around blackness and darkness -culturally, socially, and politically that invites reflection on how nurturing blackness creates possibilities of collective flourishing.
