About the Artist

Montoya Williams Tralewski is a multidisciplinary artist working at the intersections of Black cultural memory, spiritual resistance, and material play. Rooted in her Texan upbringing, her practice channels ancestral presence into contemporary spaces that are often hostile to black rest and interiority. Her work has been shown in both traditional galleries and community rooted spaces, always considerate of who the space serves and who it excludes.

Williams Tralewski uses art as a weapon, a salve, and a way to activate her community. Centering Black femme identity beyond white supremacy, she draws on African diasporic perspectives. Williams Tralewski is a Nasher Sculpture Center recipient, a Texas Biennial participant and -above all- a Nina Simone fan. She lives and works between cities, often carrying her tools, stories, and spirits with her.
